Welcome to the Illawarra District Golf Association
Golf In The IllawarraHistoryThe game of golf had its beginnings in the Illawarra District towards the end of the 19th century. It was not until 15th June 1932 that officials of the four existent and active clubs in the area, namely Kiama, Nowra, Port Kembla and Wollongong met at Tory's Hotel at Kiama to form what is now known as the Illawarra District Golf Association. The first President was Dr Jackson, a member of the Wollongong Golf Club which is the oldest golf club, being established in the Illawarra District in 1898. On the escarpment research has revealed that Moss Vale and Bowral Recreation Club was formed in 1894 with a course at Burradoo. The Illawarra golfing district was extended in 1975 to cover the four clubs in the Southern Highlands at that time. Currently there are some 23 golf clubs affiliated with the Illawarra District Golf Association which, in turn, is an affiliated member of Golf NSW. The district of Illawarra lies just south of Sydney and constitutes a coastal area extending from some 16 kms (10 miles) south of the Sydney Metropolitan area, southwards 160 kms (100 miles) to Sussex Inlet. The oldest trophy still competed for is the "White Horse Cup" which commenced in 1934 with a cup donated by Dalgety & Co. for inter-club competition. The first competition was won by the Kiama Golf Club. Affiliated membership in the Illawarra has increased from 164 club male members in 1934 to just under 8,000 in 1982 and, at the present day, there are over 9,000 male members, making the Illawarra District the biggest participating Golf Associations in New South Wales. All Illawarra golf clubs welcome members of affiliated golf clubs, as they do social clubs and social golfers. Contact can be made with clubs by referring to the Member Clubs list for details. You will be made most welcome. The Illawarra District Golf Association invites you to enjoy some of the best golf that NSW has to offer. From the Southern Highlands to the Shoalhaven there is a course to suit every golfer and facilities to make your day a great day out.
